Analyze the three major problems in the application of LED street lamps

LED lighting in China is currently undergoing a phase of independent innovation, experiencing significant growth and technological advancement. The adoption of LED street lights has been increasing, yet several challenges remain in their practical application. As a result, the entire country has become a testing ground for this technology. Some products lack scientific value and suffer from repetitive, low-level development. Several issues need to be addressed to ensure the successful implementation of LED street lamps. One major challenge is the high cost. Currently, the price of an LED street light is significantly higher than that of traditional high-pressure sodium lamps. While an imported high-pressure sodium lamp system may cost no more than 1,500 yuan, an LED street light can range from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan or even more. This means that LED street lights are two to five times more expensive than their conventional counterparts. Even though they consume half the power, the long payback period makes them less attractive for widespread adoption. Therefore, price remains one of the biggest barriers to the official promotion of LED street lights in the market. To make them competitive, manufacturers must reduce costs significantly. Only with continued improvements in LED technology and luminous efficiency can the advantages of energy savings and longevity offset the higher initial investment. Another issue is the inability of domestic light sources to meet market demand. Although China has made significant investments in LED technology, the technical level still lags behind global leaders like Cree, Nichia, and Osram, whose light sources typically achieve over 100 lm/W. Domestic LED sources are still in the process of improving, moving from 30 lm/W to 60 lm/W and aiming for 100 lm/W. However, both quality and quantity fall short of what the market needs. Additionally, while the theoretical lifespan of LED junctions is up to 100,000 hours, heat dissipation remains a critical problem, reducing actual lifespan. Light decay is also a key concern, as many manufacturers claim lifespans of 50,000 to 60,000 hours without sufficient data to back these claims. In practice, some systems have experienced rapid failure, leading to "dead lights" and damaging the reputation of LED street lighting. Power system instability is another challenge. The reliability of LED drivers is a common industry concern, acting as a hindrance to the broader adoption of LED lighting. As a crucial component of the street light, driver failures can lead to complete system failure. Outdoor conditions add stress on components, making power supply life a limiting factor for the overall lifespan of the street light. Poor reliability increases maintenance costs and complicates repairs, especially for high-rise installations. For manufacturers, unstable power supplies create additional challenges, making the quality of high-power LED drivers a critical bottleneck in the development of large-scale LED street lighting systems.
