However, some merchants may use counterfeit or imitation versions to cut costs. While they may appear similar at first, inferior components often lead to early failures. So, how can you tell if an Infineon module is genuine?
When powered on, does the module blow up? Why do you keep burning out your IGBTs? Here’s how to identify fake ones—sometimes for just a few hundred dollars.
**Tools Needed:**
- Pointer multimeter
- Capacitance meter
- Magnifying glass
- Distilled water
- Pressure gauge
**Step 1: Visual Inspection**
1. Check the laser code for clarity—real Infineon has sharp, clear markings.
2. Feel the font with your fingers—genuine modules have a raised texture, similar to RMB.
3. Use a magnifying glass to check for polishing marks—real modules are not polished.
4. Examine the nozzle for burrs—genuine modules have rounded edges without roughness.
5. Check the weight—real Infineon modules are heavier.
6. Look at the mounting holes for signs of screws or soldering—genuine modules show no such traces.
7. Press the middle square (Infineon logo)—real modules have clear silicone gel inside, no black spots.
8. Remove the label and check if the laser code matches the label—should be identical.
9. Observe the nut color—genuine Infineon uses copper-plated nuts, not zinc-plated.
10. Check for a central square—genuine Infineon has one. If there’s no square, it’s likely fake.
**Step 2: Scientific Testing**
1. Use a pointer multimeter (with 9V battery) to test triggering—genuine modules can be turned on and off.
2. Measure junction capacitance using a capacitance meter. For example, the FF300R12KS4 model should read around 26nF—any deviation suggests a fake.
3. Test with a pressure gauge—the genuine module should withstand 1600Vdc, while fakes fail quickly.
4. Test the silk screen with distilled water—genuine modules won’t lose their markings.
**Step 3: Important Notes**
- Always use a pointer multimeter, not a digital one.
- Avoid testing the same module multiple times, as it can damage the component.
- Do not touch the trigger terminal directly—static electricity can destroy the module.
- It’s recommended to install a snubber capacitor in parallel with the IGBT to suppress voltage spikes caused by stray inductance. This helps protect the module from damage.
