In recent years, China's LED lighting industry has entered a phase of independent innovation, experiencing significant growth and technological advancement. The adoption of LED street lights is expanding rapidly, but practical implementation has revealed several challenges. As a result, the entire country has become a testing ground for these new lighting solutions. Some products lack genuine technological value, leading to redundant and low-level development. Several issues remain to be addressed in the application of LED street lights.
One of the major concerns is the high cost. Currently, the price of an LED street light is significantly higher than that of traditional high-pressure sodium lamps. An LED street lamp can cost between 3,000 to 5,000 yuan or even more, while a complete set of imported high-pressure sodium lamps, including all necessary components, costs no more than 1,500 yuan. This makes LED street lights clearly expensive—often two to five times the price of their traditional counterparts. Even though LED lights consume about half the energy of high-pressure sodium lamps, the long payback period remains a major barrier to widespread adoption.
Therefore, for LED street lights to be officially promoted in the road lighting market, reducing their cost is essential. Manufacturers must find ways to lower production expenses. In the near future, only with continuous improvements in LED technology and increasing luminous efficiency will the advantages of energy savings and longevity outweigh the higher initial costs.
Another challenge is the inability of domestic LED light sources to meet market demand. Compared to international leaders like Cree, Nichia, and Osram, which produce light sources with luminous efficiency exceeding 100 lm/W, China's domestic LED technology lags behind. Although domestic manufacturers have invested heavily in R&D, the efficiency of their products is still on a gradual path from 30 lm/W to 60 lm/W and beyond. Both quality and quantity are still under development, leaving a gap between supply and demand.
Additionally, even though the theoretical lifespan of domestic LED light sources can reach up to 100,000 hours at normal temperatures, heat dissipation issues persist, significantly shortening their actual life. Light decay remains a critical problem affecting the performance and reliability of LED street lights. Many manufacturers claim lifespans of 50,000 to 60,000 hours, but there is often no solid data or real-world evidence to back these claims. In practice, some installations have experienced rapid failures, leading to "dead lights" and damaging the reputation of LED street lighting.
Another key issue is the instability of the power system. LED driver power supplies are widely recognized as a weak point in the industry. As a crucial component of the street light, any failure in the power supply can cause the entire unit to malfunction. Given the harsh outdoor conditions, the durability of power supply components becomes a limiting factor for the overall lifespan of the street light.
Poor power supply reliability can lead to early failures, making maintenance difficult and costly, especially for high-rise installations. For manufacturers, unstable power supplies increase maintenance costs and hinder the growth of high-power LED street lighting. Therefore, improving the quality and stability of high-power LED drivers is essential for the continued development of this technology.
