In recent days, many regions across the country have experienced extreme heat, leading to a surge in electricity demand. According to industry sources speaking to the China Securities Journal, as thermal power plants operate at higher capacities, the downward trend in thermal coal prices has begun to slow, signaling subtle shifts in the coal market.
High grid loads have become a common occurrence since late July, as temperatures soared nationwide. The National Grid Power Control Center reported that power grid loads hit record levels at the end of July and early August. In Beijing, for example, the power grid load reached 16.797 million kilowatts on July 30 at 4:34 PM, setting a new high. The Beijing Electric Power Company upgraded its emergency response from Level IV to Level III. Similarly, Tianjin's grid load surpassed 12 million kilowatts on July 29, reaching 12.17 million kilowatts—a 7.7% increase compared to the previous year's peak.
Southern provinces are also feeling the impact of the heat. On July 28, Hangzhou recorded a high of 40.1°C, marking five consecutive days above 40°C. Zhejiang Electric Power Co., Ltd. reported record-breaking power loads and daily electricity consumption, with the highest reaching 54.63 million kilowatts and 1.13 billion kWh. With the current maximum supply capacity hovering between 53 million and 3.55 million kilowatts, the region is facing a tight electricity balance.
Even western provinces like Ningxia have not been spared. On August 1, the power grid load in Ningxia climbed to 10.28 million kilowatts, with daily electricity consumption hitting 23,326 megawatt-hours—both records.
According to data from the State Grid, power generation volumes on July 24 and 25 set new records, reaching 16.866 billion kWh on the 25th. The national grid load also hit a record high of 627 million kilowatts on that day, with several regional grids—including those in North China, East China, and Central China—also breaking their own records.
This year’s increased grid load has not led to widespread "power shortages" as seen in previous years. Industry insiders told the China Securities Journal that in the past, power cuts were common before summer, forcing some industries to adjust production schedules. This year, despite rising residential electricity use, no major shortages have occurred.
Experts from the China Electricity Council noted that this is partly due to slower growth in industrial electricity consumption. As the government continues to phase out outdated production capacities in sectors like steel and paper, overall power demand growth remains moderate, reflecting positive structural adjustments in the economy.
Wang Zhenming, a senior engineer at the State Grid Beijing Institute of Economics and Technology, said that despite the rise in household electricity use, total societal electricity consumption is expected to reach a record high. In Hunan, for instance, the grid load hit 20.54 million kilowatts on July 24, with daily consumption reaching 429 million kWh. Hydropower contributed only 47 million kWh, while thermal power supplied 317 million kWh, highlighting the growing reliance on coal-fired generation.
Currently, the average operating rate of major thermal power plants has reached 96.6%, up 1.3 percentage points from the previous month. Coal inventories have also decreased by around 3%. Although the increased operation of thermal plants has not yet stabilized coal prices or sales, some coal companies report that the decline in coal prices has slowed since late July. With power plant stockpiles increasing, thermal coal prices may soon show signs of change.
