Wine residue feeding cows will increase milk production by 5%

A recent Australian study found that feeding the remaining residues of wine to the cows would increase milk production by 5% and reduce the amount of methane emitted by 20% of the cows.

The study from the Victorian Primary Industries Board also found that doing so would also increase the beneficial fatty acids that produce milk. Researcher Peter Moate said that the mere reduction of methane emissions by simply changing the food structure on a small scale made the researchers very surprised. “We use the waste from the wine industry and become a very valuable feed additive.”

In the study, scientists added 5 kg of wine residue to the cow's food daily, compared with 37 cows who consumed conventional diet.

According to Moate, milk from dairy cows with added grape residue has a fatty acid content six times higher than that of conventional cows. "This fatty acid is very good for the heart and can fight cancer, diabetes and arthritis."

The study also found that the amount of antioxidants in such milk is likely to be higher, but further testing is needed to confirm.

The research project is dedicated to finding food additives that effectively reduce methane emissions from livestock, including beer distiller's grains and rapeseed meal.

Victoria's dairy products account for 85% of Australia's total, with 1 million cows and 5.9 billion tons of raw milk per year.
