In a media briefing held by the Shandong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention on June 30, Kong Fanling, director of the Occupational and Environmental Health Monitoring and Evaluation Institute, disclosed that over the past decade, more than 1,000 new cases of occupational diseases have been reported annually in the province. This alarming trend highlights the ongoing challenges in safeguarding workers' health.
Occupational disease hazards in China remain a critical public health concern, with high incidence rates, significant economic losses, and widespread social impact. According to a notice released by the National Health and Family Planning Commission on June 30, there were 26,393 reported cases of occupational diseases nationwide in 2013. The majority of these cases came from industries such as coal, non-ferrous metals, machinery, and construction, accounting for 73.53% of all reports. Among these, pneumoconiosis was the most prevalent, making up 87.72% of all recorded occupational diseases that year.
Shao Shaofeng, deputy director of the Occupational and Environmental Health Monitoring and Evaluation Institute, emphasized that one of the biggest challenges in preventing occupational diseases is raising awareness among all worker groups. He pointed out that many frontline employees, especially rural migrant workers, lack knowledge about workplace hazards and often work in poor conditions. Additionally, many small and medium-sized enterprises fail to provide adequate occupational health protections, leading to severe health consequences.
Zhou Jingyang, another deputy director at the provincial disease control center, stressed that the key to reducing the high rate of occupational diseases lies in empowering employees with a sense of hazard awareness. When workers understand their rights and risks, they can actively cooperate with safety measures and report violations to relevant authorities. Zhou believes that while the role of disease control departments is important, it is crucial for communities and workers themselves to form a united effort in promoting workplace health and safety.
As the issue continues to gain attention, experts are calling for stronger policies, better enforcement, and increased education to protect the health of millions of workers across the country. With collective action and improved awareness, there is hope for a safer and healthier working environment for all.
