Raising pigs with sugar to cure diseases and nutrition

Sugars such as brown sugar, white sugar, sucrose, saccharin, and glucose are widely used in animal feed. Beyond just adding sweetness, they play an important role in improving the health and growth of livestock, particularly pigs. These sweeteners not only help prevent certain diseases but also act as nutritional supplements that support overall well-being. Pigs have a natural preference for sweet flavors, which makes them more likely to consume feed containing small amounts of sugar. For instance, when piglets begin weaning at around 7 days old, adding 2% white sugar or 0.01% saccharin to their feed can encourage immediate consumption and help them adapt to solid food. This addition not only improves feed intake but also enhances the nutritional value of the diet. Studies have shown that mixing small quantities of sugar with medicinal tablets or powders can encourage pigs to eat their medication more readily. In terms of performance, research indicates that adding 0.05 grams of saccharin per kilogram of compound feed can significantly increase feed intake, leading to a 7% improvement in daily weight gain. In growing pigs, incorporating 1.5% sucrose into their feed can boost average daily gain by 8.72%, improve feed conversion efficiency by 6.3%, and reduce the feed-to-meat ratio by 0.32%. Additionally, adding 60 ppm of saccharin during lactation can help prevent appetite loss and excessive mite infestations in sows, while increasing milk production by 8% to 10%. Sugar also plays a crucial role in enhancing the survival rate of newborn piglets. Administering 5% glucose or concentrated sugar water immediately after birth helps prevent hypoglycemia caused by poor nutrition, thereby increasing survival rates. Moreover, sugar stimulates acid production in the piglet’s gastrointestinal tract, which supports digestion and promotes healthy development. For older sows experiencing low libido, a traditional remedy involves boiling 250 grams of brown sugar into a syrup, then diluting it with water and mixing it into their feed. This is typically done once, and if no improvement is seen, the treatment can be repeated after three days. Another method involves dissolving 250 grams of brown sugar in boiling water, adding 2–3 egg whites, and allowing the sow to drink it. This is usually given once or twice, depending on the response. By incorporating these sweeteners strategically, farmers can enhance feed palatability, improve growth performance, and support the health of both piglets and adult pigs.
