Maintenance Skills
Green radish thrives best in loose, organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral sandy loam soil. It's recommended to repot every three years. As a shade-tolerant plant, it prefers indirect light and should be kept away from direct sunlight. Four hours of diffused light per day is ideal for its growth.
For propagation, cuttings and layering are effective methods. Select a healthy vine, cut it into two parts, being careful not to damage the air roots. Place the cuttings in sand or ash, burying them about one-third deep. Keep the cuttings in a shaded area, mist with a new high-fat film moisturizer to enhance survival rates—over 90% success is achievable.
Green radish requires high humidity and a moist environment. During summer, when it's at its peak growth stage, mist the roots and leaves several times a day. This helps remove dust, improves respiration, keeps leaves vibrant, and reduces leaf temperature. The primary fertilizer should be nitrogen-based, with potassium as a supplement. Applying a new high-fat film after fertilizing can protect the nutrients. In winter, when temperatures drop, green radish enters dormancy, so watering should be reduced, and the soil should remain dry.
The optimal daytime temperature for green radish is between 20°C and 28°C, while nighttime temperatures should range from 15°C to 18°C. If indoor temperatures stay above 10°C during winter, the plant can survive safely. Below 5°C may cause leaf damage. Using a growth enhancer like Zhuangshenling during the growing season can help make stems thicker, leaves greener, and the plant more vigorous.
Maintenance Characteristics
(1) Light: Green radish naturally grows under tree cover, so it doesn’t require strong light. However, in northern regions during autumn and winter, increasing light exposure can support photosynthesis. Place the plant in the brightest spot in the room or move it to a sunny balcony at noon. Avoid opening windows too often when it’s cold, as frost could harm the leaves quickly.
(2) Temperature: As long as the indoor temperature stays above 10°C, green radish can survive the winter. If the temperature rises above 20°C, it will grow normally. Most households can easily maintain this temperature. Be cautious of large temperature fluctuations and avoid placing the plant near heating sources.
(3) Humidity: Maintaining proper humidity is crucial for healthy growth. You can use a humidifier for over five hours daily, mist the plant with a fine spray, keep water in the pot tray to increase local humidity, or place a damp cloth near the plant. Covering the plant with a plastic bag can create a mini greenhouse effect, but limit this to no more than two hours per day to ensure proper ventilation.
(4) Water: In autumn and winter, watering should be carefully controlled based on the room temperature. Before heating, water less, keeping the amount between 1/4 and 1/2 of usual. After heating, avoid overwatering—pour water slowly into the saucer, allowing it to seep through. In winter, let the water sit for a day to warm up before using it, as cold water can damage the roots. Also, spray the air roots to prevent dehydration.
(5) Fertilizer: During winter, green radish grows slowly or stops, so fertilization should be reduced. Before winter, apply liquid inorganic fertilizer every 15 days. After winter, switch to foliar feeding, which allows the plant to absorb nutrients directly through the leaves. Use specialized foliar fertilizers, as regular ones may not be absorbed effectively. Products like Peking University Flower Protection Series or Japanese flower sprays work well.
(6) Pests and Diseases: Green plants are prone to pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Mealybugs are common and can be removed manually or with alcohol-soaked cotton swabs. Fungal or bacterial infections may lead to root rot, leaf spots, or wilting. To prevent root rot, avoid overwatering. When purchasing a green plant, check the roots to ensure they are healthy and intact.
