The three-color dragon tree, also known as the three-color wood or *Cordyline terminalis*, is a striking ornamental plant native to China and India. It thrives in warm, humid conditions with slightly acidic sandy loam soil. The ideal winter temperature should not drop below 5°C, and it prefers full sun but can be sensitive to direct midday sunlight.
When growing this plant, it's beneficial to mist the stems and leaves during the summer growing season to maintain humidity and promote healthy growth. Fertilize every two weeks, and for older plants, you may increase the frequency to once a week. In midsummer, provide some shade at noon to prevent leaf burn. During winter, reduce watering and ensure the soil dries out between waterings. Sufficient sunlight is essential for its vibrant colors and overall health.
Propagation of the three-color dragon tree is best done through cuttings or stem division. Cuttings are most effective from June to October. Take 10–15 cm top shoots with 5–6 leaves and place them in a well-draining medium. Rooting typically occurs within a month. For stem division, select a healthy main stem about 20 cm from the top and make a 1 cm wide strip. Cover the area with moist moss and wrap it in plastic film. Roots usually develop within 40 days.
Common pests and diseases include anthracnose and leaf spot, which can be treated with a 10% antibacterial agent (such as 401) diluted to 1000 times. Scale insects may also appear, and these can be controlled with 40% omethoate EC diluted to 1000 times. The three-color dragon tree has a straight, upright trunk and lush foliage, making it an excellent choice for entrances, public spaces, and hallways. Potted specimens are elegant and stylish, perfect for guest rooms, office spaces, or window displays.
