In September 2013, during the International Society "EU PVSEC" conference, KANEKA announced a breakthrough in photovoltaic technology. The company developed a 5-inch square (171.28 cm²) crystalline silicon solar cell that achieved an impressive conversion efficiency of 24.2%. Additionally, they reported that a 6-inch square (239.37 cm²) unit reached 23.6% efficiency and produced 5.64W of power. According to Zhonghua, with further advancements in materials and production techniques, it is possible to reach 25% efficiency for the 6-inch unit, potentially generating 6W of power.
Zhonghua introduced a monocrystalline silicon solar cell that incorporates heterojunction technology and copper wiring. The heterojunction design uses amorphous silicon layers on top of crystalline silicon, which helps reduce carrier recombination at the junction, improving overall performance. Meanwhile, the copper wiring method replaces traditional silver paste with copper plating, reducing both resistance and material costs, making the cells more cost-effective without compromising efficiency.
The company also presented the results of reliability tests on modules made from these prototype units. Under harsh conditions—85°C temperature and 85% humidity—the modules were tested for 3,000 hours. They also underwent 600 thermal cycles between -45°C and +85°C, yet showed minimal changes in performance. The conversion efficiency was verified by the Fraunhofer ISE, a renowned research institute in renewable energy.
