In September 2013, during the International Society "EU PVSEC" conference, KANEKA announced a major breakthrough in photovoltaic technology. The company developed a 5-inch square (171.28 cm²) crystalline silicon solar cell that achieved an impressive conversion efficiency of 24.2%. Additionally, a 6-inch square (239.37 cm²) unit reached a conversion efficiency of 23.6%, with an output power of 5.64W. According to Zhonghua, further improvements in materials and manufacturing processes could potentially push the efficiency of the 6-inch unit to 25% and increase its output power to 6W.
Zhonghua also introduced a monocrystalline silicon solar cell that uses a heterojunction design combined with copper wiring technology. The heterojunction structure, which layers amorphous silicon on top of crystalline silicon, helps reduce carrier recombination at the junction, thereby improving overall performance. Meanwhile, the copper wiring method replaces traditional silver paste with copper plating, significantly lowering both resistance and material costs.
In addition to these innovations, the company presented results from reliability tests on prototype modules. These tests were conducted under extreme conditions: 85°C temperature and 85% humidity for 3,000 hours. The modules also underwent 600 cycles of temperature changes between -45°C and +85°C. Despite these harsh conditions, the module characteristics remained largely unchanged, indicating strong durability. The conversion efficiency was measured by the Fraunhofer ISE institute.
