Fujian Building Materials Co., Ltd. has pioneered a new and sustainable use of marble powder, replacing traditional limestone as a desulfurizer in power plants. The company now consumes over 900,000 tons of marble powder annually, significantly reducing its operational costs by more than 20%. This innovative approach not only enhances cost efficiency but also contributes to environmental protection by repurposing industrial waste.
The breakthrough came after years of research and testing. In 2012, the company’s technical team conducted extensive field investigations in the Nan’nan stone powder area, analyzing the properties of the waste material. They found that the marble powder had chemical characteristics comparable to, and in some cases even better than, limestone. Encouraged by these results, the company formed a dedicated R&D team to explore the feasibility of using marble powder as a desulfurizer.
Following rigorous experimentation, they developed an industrial test program titled “Marble Powder as a Desulfurizer Instead of Limestone.†With support from Hongshan Thermal Power Plant, the team successfully completed a series of tests, replacing 10% to 100% of limestone with marble powder. The Fujian Provincial Environmental Monitoring Center conducted on-site monitoring for two days and confirmed that the results met all required standards.
This development marks a significant milestone in China’s efforts to promote circular economy practices.
