SolidWorks helps InFocus innovate and design, and stay in mobile projectors

InFocus Corporation, a leading name in the mobile projector industry, has revolutionized how presentations are delivered by introducing the first mobile projection system capable of displaying computer content on a large screen. Since its inception, InFocus has played a key role in shaping the standard for demonstration tools, combining notebooks, presentation software, and mobile projectors to make it an essential part of both business and educational settings. Faced with the need to stay ahead of the competition, InFocus evaluated its product development platform in 2000. At that time, the company used I-DEAS 3D CAD on UNIX workstations but recognized the need for a more efficient system to handle complex geometries and surfaces. As David Mulholland, a senior applications engineer, explained, the industry trend was moving toward smaller and lighter projectors, which required innovative, curved designs that demanded advanced CAD capabilities. After evaluating several options, including Pro/ENGINEER and I-DEAS, InFocus chose SolidWorks Professional. The decision was based on its ease of use, powerful features, and integrated product data management. “SolidWorks made things easier compared to I-DEAS,” Mulholland noted. “During the evaluation, we realized it was the best fit for our needs and offered great value.” With SolidWorks, InFocus engineers were able to refine their designs more efficiently, allowing for greater innovation. The design process involved close collaboration between mechanical and electrical teams. Mechanical engineers used SolidWorks to develop enclosures and components, while electrical engineers worked on circuit boards. The integration of CircuitWorks allowed them to seamlessly combine the board into the 3D model, streamlining the workflow. The transition to SolidWorks also helped InFocus reduce the size and weight of its projectors. Engineers could manage over 500 parts in a compact space, using dynamic collision detection to optimize assembly. Injection molded parts were analyzed for draft angles and wall thickness, minimizing potential mold issues. InFocus also leveraged SolidWorks Simulation for stress analysis and SolidWorks PDM for managing design data, significantly improving efficiency and accuracy. “SolidWorks Simulation allows us to set loads, limits, and critical conditions easily, and it’s really powerful,” Mulholland said. The LP120 Mobile Projector, the first product designed entirely with SolidWorks, exemplified this success. With a lightweight magnesium frame and a weight of just 1.98 pounds, it won the "Editor's Choice Award" from LAPTOP magazine. This achievement reinforced InFocus’s position as an industry leader and demonstrated the power of SolidWorks in driving innovation. “We don’t want to follow others; we want to lead with breakthroughs,” Mulholland emphasized. “SolidWorks supports our goals by helping us create higher-quality products and push the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Double Acting Hydraulic Cylinder

A double-acting hydraulic cylinder is a type of hydraulic cylinder that has two ports for fluid entry and exit. It is capable of performing work in both directions, providing both extension and retraction forces.
The operation of a double-acting hydraulic cylinder involves the use of hydraulic fluid, typically oil, which is pressurized to move a piston inside the cylinder. When fluid is supplied to one port, it pushes the piston in one direction, extending the cylinder. When fluid is supplied to the other port, it pushes the piston in the opposite direction, retracting the cylinder.
This type of hydraulic cylinder is commonly used in various applications, such as construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and industrial machinery. It provides the ability to exert force in both directions, allowing for more versatile and efficient operation.
