According to the Russian Institute of Nuclear Reactor Research, the Institute has begun research on the nuclear power station reactors for the loading of new hybrid regenerated nuclear fuel (REMIX), which helps increase the efficiency of the use of uranium in nuclear power. Researchers recovered new unmixed recycled nuclear fuel by recovering an unseparated mixture of uranium and plutonium. The mixture is formed when the used nuclear fuel is processed, and a small amount of enriched uranium is added to it, so that not only the plutonium contained in the waste fuel can be reused, but also Uranium-235 that is not fully combusted can be utilized. This technology will help reduce the use of natural uranium in nuclear power in the future.
In July of this year, the first samples of mixed regenerated nuclear fuel were loaded in the PWR-1000 pressurized water reactor of Unit 3 of Barakovo Nuclear Power Station. Researchers have experimented to prove the efficiency of new fuels. Around 2020 to 2021, these samples will be taken from the reactor and will be further studied. Based on the results of the study, they will decide how to introduce such fuel into nuclear power plants.
At the same time, in the specialized research reactor of the Lenin Institute of Nuclear Reactor Research, a mixed-renewed nuclear fuel test will also be carried out and is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Later reactor research will also be conducted later.
The mixed-renewable nuclear fuel research project was launched in 2014. Several Russian nuclear industrial enterprises participated in the project, including the Russian State Atomic Energy Agency (ROSATOM) and the Lenin Reactor Research Institute (HHHAP). The Kurchatov Institute is also a key participant in the project.
Previously, it was reported that if the efficiency and safety of the mixed regenerated nuclear fuel were confirmed, the Russian nuclear power plant may start using this fuel in 2030.
In the future, Russia’s National Atomic Energy Corporation may also provide foreign-subscribing parties with mixed-renewable nuclear fuel as part of a comprehensive proposal. This comprehensive proposal includes building services for nuclear power plant units abroad, supplying fuel to nuclear power plant units, providing after-sales services, promoting the operation of nuclear power units, and cultivating necessary personnel.
