But "by 2050, China's population will drop by about 60 million, and the working-age population will fall by about 1/3, or 212 million. This is equivalent to the current population size of Brazil (the country with the fifth largest population in the world)" .
According to the report, in the near future, the absolute value of China's population over 65 will be very high, which is particularly shocking because it means that China will also have problems with older economies such as Japan. Fewer working-age people need to support more retirees and older people.
The US Census Bureau released a report on the global ageing phenomenon in March, comparing the population of China over 65 with the total population of several major developed markets:
In 2015, the number of elderly people in China (136.9 million) exceeded the total population of Japan (126.9 million).
By 2030, the projected population of Japan and Egypt (231.8 million) will be lower than China's predicted population of 65 years and older (238.8 million).
