A. Apply a few drops of tea or water on the back of the tile. After a few minutes, observe how much the liquid is absorbed. If the water remains as droplets and isn't absorbed quickly, it indicates low water absorption, which is a sign of high-quality porcelain.
B. Tap the tile gently with your fingers or a small object. A crisp, ringing sound suggests a dense, hard, and high-quality ceramic. A dull sound may mean the tile is less compact and lower in quality.
C. Use a sharp object like a knife or key to scratch the surface of the tile. If visible scratches appear, it means the surface is not durable. Once the glaze is damaged, cleaning becomes more difficult and the tile may lose its shine over time.
D. Examine the color of the tile. Vibrant, natural colors indicate high-quality porcelain. If the colors are dull or unclear, it could suggest lower quality materials or poor manufacturing processes.
E. When buying tiles, inspect the surface closely within one meter using your naked eye. If you spot pinholes or tiny imperfections, it may mean the glaze hasn’t fully fused, making the surface prone to dirt buildup and harder to clean.
F. Check for warping by looking at the edges of the tile with your eyes. If the tile is significantly warped, it can affect its stability and durability over time, leading to uneven installation and potential cracking.
G. Test the squareness of the tile by placing four tiles on the floor and rearranging them in different combinations. If the gaps between the tiles are even and the corners align well, the tiles are likely to be properly shaped and uniform.
H. To check flatness, place two tiles face-to-face and try to rotate one. If it spins easily, the surfaces are uneven, which can lead to problems during installation and reduce the tile’s overall performance.
