With the continuous enhancement of China's technological innovation capabilities, "Made in China" is gradually evolving into "Created in China." This transformation is evident in the export sector, where products are shifting from low-tech to high-end, large-scale, and intelligent solutions. The construction machinery industry stands as a prime example of this transition.
Domestic construction machinery manufacturers have shown strong performance in international exports. According to the latest data, in the first seven months of this year, the total import and export volume of the machinery industry reached 378.774 billion U.S. dollars, representing a 0.41% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth rate was 2.17 percentage points higher than the previous six months. Specifically, exports totaled 211.23 billion U.S. dollars, up 4.03% year-on-year, while imports dropped to 167.544 billion U.S. dollars, a decrease of 3.82% year-on-year. This resulted in an accumulated trade surplus of 43.686 billion U.S. dollars.
Looking at the types of machinery being exported, high-tech equipment is gaining more recognition globally. In the first half of the year, the export value of construction machinery reached 6.142 billion U.S. dollars, a 1.76% increase compared to the previous year. However, the export of parts and components declined sharply by 61.36%, which led to an overall drop in construction machinery exports by 19.05%.
Industry insiders highlight that independent innovation has been a key driver behind the success of Chinese construction machinery companies. Large-scale machinery involves complex technology, small production volumes, high costs, and significant operational risks. Before the introduction of the "Tenth Five-Year Plan," many domestic firms were hesitant to enter this market. However, with the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," the need for advanced machinery became clear, especially for large infrastructure and industrial projects. Despite a late start, the Chinese construction machinery industry has grown rapidly, especially over the past decade, marking a golden era for the sector.
China’s construction machinery industry has made remarkable progress in technological innovation, product development, manufacturing, and supply chain control, significantly improving its global standing. For instance, Xugong Machinery’s journey in developing all-terrain cranes began with the launch of China’s first 25-ton model in 2002. Through continuous innovation, it introduced several groundbreaking designs, making China the third country in the world capable of independently producing and mass-producing such machines.
In addition, in early 2024, 448 sets of Zoomlion’s 80-meter pump trucks set a new Guinness World Record and were delivered worldwide. Companies like Sany Heavy Industry and Liugong have also achieved notable success through innovation. As industries continue to upgrade, research and development in engineering machinery is moving toward high-end, large-scale, and intelligent solutions, giving "Made in China" a stronger edge in overseas markets.
Over the past decade, under national support, several key enterprises have managed to produce 26 types of construction machinery commonly found in the international market, with quality comparable to foreign products. Among the top 50 global construction machinery manufacturers, 11 Chinese companies have entered the list, with three of them ranked among the top ten. While Chinese enterprises still lag behind the global leaders in scale and efficiency, their progress is undeniable.
Notably, the global expansion of domestic engineering companies has accelerated the internationalization of "China-created" equipment. Sany Heavy Industry acquired Germany’s Putzmeister, while Guangxi Liugong purchased HSW’s engineering division in Poland. Xugong also acquired a leading German concrete machinery company. These acquisitions have brought advanced technologies, global sales networks, and management expertise to Chinese firms, enhancing their international competitiveness.
With these strategic moves, Chinese construction machinery companies have experienced rapid growth in product quality, R&D, technology, operations, and overseas distribution channels. Many companies have established service centers, parts warehouses, and R&D facilities around the world, ensuring reliable after-sales support. As a result, Chinese construction machinery products are now close to international standards and offer great value, particularly in developing countries.
