The selection and use of earplugs

Noise earplugs are essential for protecting your ears from loud environments, but they also come with potential risks if not used properly. When purchasing and using earplugs over a long period, it's important to consider the following key factors:

First, evaluate quality

The rebound effect is a crucial indicator of an earplug’s quality. If the earplug is too elastic, it may expand the ear canal when pressed, causing discomfort such as ear fullness or pain. On the other hand, if it's too soft, it might not form a proper seal, reducing its noise-blocking effectiveness. The ideal earplug should have a moderate rebound speed—too fast or too slow can both be problematic. A slower rebound often indicates better quality and longer-lasting comfort.

Softness is another important factor. The material should be gentle on the ear canal to ensure all-day comfort. Additionally, the surface texture matters. Some earplugs may feel sticky or leave residue in the ear, which can be uncomfortable and even lead to irritation. To test this, press two earplugs together and try to pull them apart. If they separate easily, it’s a sign of good quality and minimal stickiness.

Second, be aware of hidden risks

Improper use of earplugs can push earwax deeper into the ear canal, potentially leading to tinnitus, reduced hearing, or even infections. People with excessive earwax should be especially cautious and clean their earplugs regularly with water and mild soap. However, foam earplugs are typically disposable, and soaking them in water may damage their structure, affecting their ability to rebound properly.

Moreover, in warm and humid conditions, earplugs can become a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the risk of ear infections. While noise-canceling earplugs are generally safe, long-term use requires care. Inserting them too deeply can increase pressure on the eardrum, causing pain. To avoid this, gently insert the earplug until it fully expands, and avoid pushing it further in. When removing, do so slowly rather than pulling it out abruptly to prevent unnecessary pressure on the eardrum.
