Factors Affecting the Flowering of Geranium:
Geraniums are beautiful flowering plants, but their blooming can be affected by several environmental and care-related factors. Understanding these issues can help you grow healthy and vibrant geraniums.
First, overwatering or excessive rain can lead to waterlogged soil, which causes root rot. This results in yellow leaves, leggy growth, and poor flowering. It's important to ensure proper drainage and avoid keeping the soil too moist for extended periods.
Second, improper fertilization is another common issue. Too much nitrogen fertilizer can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers, leading to sparse or no blooms. On the other hand, under-fertilizing can also hinder growth and flowering. To maintain balance, it's best to apply a phosphorus and potassium-rich fertilizer during early spring or autumn, when the plant is actively growing.
Third, temperature plays a significant role. If the room temperature exceeds 20°C during winter and ventilation is poor, the plant may grow excessively, which can reduce flowering the following season. In contrast, if temperatures drop below 0°C, the plant is at risk of frost damage, causing yellow and soft leaf edges. Geraniums are also sensitive to sudden temperature changes, which can cause flowers to drop prematurely.
Fourth, too much direct sunlight, especially in summer, can cause sunburn on the leaf edges, leading to poor growth or even flower and leaf drop. Providing partial shade during the hottest parts of the day can help protect the plant.
Fifth, excessive pruning or topping can delay flowering and result in fewer blooms. If you're growing geraniums indoors during winter and spring, make sure they receive enough light. Insufficient light can prevent blooming altogether, and even existing flower buds may wither due to lack of light. So, it’s essential to place them in a bright location during the colder months.
