Factors Affecting the Flowering of Geranium:
Geraniums are beautiful flowering plants that require proper care to thrive and bloom. Several factors can influence their ability to flower, so it's important to understand what might be causing your geraniums to not perform as expected.
First, overwatering or excessive rain can lead to waterlogged soil, which causes root rot. This results in yellowing leaves, leggy growth, and ultimately, poor flowering. It’s essential to ensure good drainage and avoid keeping the soil constantly wet.
Second, improper fertilization can also affect blooming. Too much nitrogen-rich fertilizer may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers, leading to sparse or no blooms. On the other hand, not enough fertilizer can hinder overall plant development. To support healthy flowering, apply a balanced phosphorus and potassium-based fertilizer during early spring or autumn.
Temperature is another critical factor. Geraniums prefer moderate temperatures. If the room temperature stays above 20°C during winter with poor ventilation, the plant may grow excessively but fail to flower properly the following season. Conversely, if temperatures drop below 0°C, the plant can suffer from frost damage, causing yellowing and softening of the leaves. Sudden temperature changes can also cause flowers to drop prematurely.
Light exposure is equally important. Geraniums need plenty of sunlight, but direct summer sun can scorch the leaves, especially on the edges. This can lead to stunted growth or even flower and leaf loss. Providing partial shade during the hottest parts of the day can help prevent this issue.
Lastly, over-pruning or excessive topping can delay flowering. If you remove too many leaves, the plant may take longer to produce flowers. Additionally, during winter and early spring, if geraniums are kept indoors with insufficient light, they may not flower at all. Even existing flower buds can dry out and shrink due to lack of light. Make sure to place them in a bright, well-lit area during these seasons.
