For instance, if a refrigerant leaks, it contributes directly to warming, and inefficient systems may require more energy, increasing CO2 emissions. It’s important to evaluate alternatives to refrigerants carefully. Even low-ODP and low-GWP options can have negative environmental impacts if they reduce system efficiency, leading to higher energy consumption and increased CO2 emissions. When leakage rates are low, the importance of ODP and GWP decreases, but the overall environmental impact must still be considered.
