Waste car battery "conversion" into photovoltaic cells

MIT announced that their researchers have found a way to make solar cells from used car batteries. This not only avoids waste pollution, but also reduces the cost of solar cells. It serves both purposes.

Specifically, researchers at MIT found out how to extract lead from used car batteries and use it for a component of a solar cell. The solar cells thus produced are basically equivalent in energy efficiency to those produced using high-purity commercial materials.

At present, researchers of solar energy technology have devoted a lot of energy to the use of perovskite to make high-efficiency solar cells. But they found that most solar cells made with perovskite contain lead. As the excavation of lead minerals consumes a lot of energy, it also emits toxic gases to the atmosphere, which is a big burden on the natural environment. As a result, MIT researchers began to search for sources of lead that did not require the development of new mines, and waste car batteries were a perfect source, especially considering that recycled lead was no worse in performance than newly tapped lead.

Angela Belcher, a professor of MIT bioengineering and materials science engineering, said that she and her colleagues found a simple way to extract lead from used batteries by simply turning on the car's battery and scraping the lead off the battery's electrodes. Of course, the average person should not try this on his own, because the car battery contains sulfuric acid and poisonous lead. Opening it is a very dangerous thing.
