U.S. to Build Nuclear Power Plant on Moon Mars to Supply Extraterrestrial Base

According to a report from the American Physicists Organization Network, at the 242nd session of the American Chemical Society National Convention and Exposition held on the 28th, James Werner, head of the US Department of Energy’s project, said that NASA will The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy will cooperate to implement a plan to build nuclear power plants on the Moon, Mars, and other planets to provide power to manned or unmanned bases. He pointed out that the innovative nuclear fission technology used for the ground supply of extraterrestrial planets is very different from the technology adopted by the Earth’s nuclear power plant. The latter’s huge footprint requires the construction of large facilities such as cooling towers.

Werner said: “People have never regarded the fission power system as a nuclear power plant. The width of this reactor is about 1.5 feet (about 45.72 centimeters) or so, and the height is about 2.5 feet (about 76.2 centimeters) or so. A suitcase is equivalent. In addition, this nuclear power plant does not need to build a cooling tower. The nuclear fission power generation system is a compact system and is safe and reliable, and may be the key to build outposts or habitats on other planets. Nuclear fission power generation technology can be used on the moon , Mars, or NASA needs any place for continuous power."

The project team will build a technology verification device in 2012. The Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory funded the project and Verner served as project leader. This project involves reactor design and modeling, fuel development and assembly, and the development of small electric pumps for liquid metal cooling systems.

In the past, sunlight and fuel cells were the mainstay of power for space missions, but engineers came to realize that there are many limitations to solar power generation. Solar cells perform well in near-Earth orbital power supply, satisfying the electricity demand of satellite-borne instruments and equipment. In contrast, nuclear power generation has the unparalleled advantage of solar energy and can meet the demand for power supply from other planets or satellites. .

Werner said: "The biggest difference between solar and nuclear reactors is that nuclear reactors can generate electricity in any environment. The fission power system is not dependent on sunlight and can generate large quantities of stable electricity at night or in harsh environments, such as on the Moon or Mars. The nuclear fission power system on the moon generates more than 40 kilowatts of electricity, roughly the same amount of electricity used by eight houses on Earth.” In addition, nuclear fission power systems can be used in many areas, such as craters, Canyon or cave. He said: "A great advantage of nuclear power is that it can provide a power-rich environment for astronauts or scientific instruments in any part of the solar system. This technology is very mature and affordable, and can be used safely."

Nuclear fission power generation systems rely on the energy generated by fission reactions. Specifically, this reaction refers to the uranium atoms splitting to generate enormous heat, which is then converted into electrical energy. The main components of a nuclear fission power generation system are similar to those currently used in commercial reactors, specifically referring to a heat source, energy conversion, heat removal, power regulation, and distribution system.

Werner pointed out that although the components are similar, there are many differences between the fission power generation systems used in space and commercial reactors. He said: "Although the principles of physics are the same, low power levels, reactor control, and materials used for core neutron reflections are completely different. Weight is also an important factor, and space reactors must be miniaturized. The reactors are different.” Werner pointed out that once the technology is developed and validated, it may be the most economically affordable and versatile way to supply long-term power for space exploration programs.
