"Mahogany veneer" furniture disrupts the market and makes huge profits

As mahogany furniture gains more popularity among consumers, some unscrupulous businesses have started to flood the market with "mahogany veneer" products, making significant profits by misleading buyers. This has created confusion and raised concerns about authenticity in the industry. A local consumer, Ms. Fan, recently tried to purchase a small mahogany table but found that prices varied greatly across different markets. When she asked for material documentation, many sellers refused, and some even seemed annoyed by her questions. She told reporters that some vendors treated her as if she were causing trouble. According to industry experts from the Municipal Furniture Association, several types of mahogany, including rosewood and red rosewood, hold considerable value. However, due to limited supply and strict export controls from producing countries, raw materials have become increasingly expensive. As a result, genuine collector-grade mahogany furniture is now quite costly. In contrast, many so-called "mahogany" pieces on the market are actually ordinary wood coated with thin layers of real wood, such as Huanghua pear, red rosewood, or red leaf sandalwood. These are often disguised to look like authentic mahogany, making it nearly impossible for average consumers to tell the difference. The price gap between real mahogany and these "veneer" products can be tenfold or more. In an effort to address this issue, the "General Technical Conditions of Mahogany Furniture," also known as the national standard, was introduced in 2013. It requires manufacturers to provide three essential documents: a product manual, a quality card, and a certificate of conformity. However, during a recent visit to furniture stores, reporters found that most manufacturers failed to provide these documents. Some salespeople openly admitted that their products were not entirely made of mahogany, with some internal parts constructed from other hardwoods. Consumers are increasingly concerned about the lack of transparency and the difficulty in distinguishing real mahogany from fake alternatives. Many expressed frustration over past experiences where they encountered quality issues and were met with poor customer service. While some brands promote slogans like "full-time fidelity, fake one compensation two," many consumers remain skeptical, believing that such promises should be legally binding through formal contracts. Industry insiders suggest that besides urging regulatory authorities to enforce standards, both retailers and manufacturers must take responsibility. For instance, they should use detailed material names as specified by the government in sales contracts and clearly outline after-sales commitments. Only through honesty and transparency can trust be restored in the mahogany furniture market.
