Green home is everyone's dream. How far is it from the green home? The results of an up-to-date public interest survey are not optimistic. Surveys show that although Chinese consumers have urgent needs for green and environmentally friendly home improvement products and services, relevant perceptions are generally one-sided. The survey also selected ten cities in China for environmental protection home improvement. The results showed that Qingdao and Beijing ranked first, Xiamen ranked second, and Shanghai and Suzhou tied for third. In relatively economically developed cities, the popularity of green home improvement is relatively high. Consumers generally believe that to achieve green home improvement, home improvement products and services should be considered in terms of “safety, health, and energy conservation.†At the same time, the survey found that large-scale home improvement chain supermarkets are the preferred channel for Chinese consumers to purchase green home improvement products.
Worthy of concern is that consumers' awareness of green home furnishings is generally insufficient and Beijing has only reached an average level. More than half of Chinese consumers do not understand the hidden dangers in home decoration and lack the knowledge to avoid or eliminate these hidden dangers, especially the security problems caused by construction and other home improvement links. The three major hidden dangers of home decoration that consumers are most concerned about are electrical fires, slippery bathrooms, and leaking water pipes. Compared with the safety issues in home improvement, Chinese consumers have lower awareness of the health problems caused by home decoration, and most consumers are still not aware of the possible health damage caused by improper home decoration practices. Excessive harmful gases in the air, improper lighting arrangements cause visual impairment, and water quality pollution is the most concerned health hazards of home improvement.
The survey also found that Chinese consumers urgently need to learn more about the basics of green home improvement, and the awareness of consumers in large and medium-sized cities has only reached the national average. The popularity of home improvement energy-saving knowledge among Chinese consumers is relatively highest, but for some daily simple energy-saving measures and methods for purchasing energy-saving products, consumer awareness is not sufficient. If indoor thermal insulation materials are selected to reduce energy consumption, properly selected outlets with switches or timers, etc.
Dong Jingsheng, deputy secretary-general of the China Consumers Association, told reporters: “Consumers have urgent needs for green homes, but there are many misunderstandings about their awareness. This highlights the necessity of green consumerism and consumer education. As a result of the survey, the government formulated a consumer education program and cooperated with relevant departments, industry associations, and enterprises to popularize scientific and accurate green home improvement consumer knowledge. The department made recommendations and called for the introduction of policies that are conducive to the consumption of environmentally friendly products."
