Reverse osmosis membrane replacement installation and removal tips

Reverse osmosis membranes are the core components of water treatment, and are generally used for drinking pure water equipment, industrial pure water equipment, and the reuse of wastewater in wastewater, usually using quartz sand filters, activated carbon filters, and precision filters as pretreatments. Permeation membrane element protection, reverse osmosis membrane life of about 2--5 years, when the membrane water output is small, the salt rejection rate is low, repeated scientific cleaning and regeneration can not be improved, replace the membrane element, install the following Precautions. If these precautions are not strictly observed, damage may be caused to the membrane element or the operator to varying degrees, and the performance of the membrane element may not be fully utilized or the human body may be injured. Therefore, be sure to confirm the following precautions and strictly observe them before starting operation.

Precautions Reason Influence degree
1
Remove the membrane element from the packaging bag and be careful not to scratch the surface of the membrane element and hand when using scissors or a knife.
If you use a scissors or knife to cut the bag, inserting it too deep may damage the surface of the film. Excessive force may cause cuts.

2
The packaging bag is filled with 1% sodium bisulphite as a protective liquid. Please wear protective glasses and gloves [1].
Use 1% sodium bisulfite as a protective solution. Open the package in a well-ventilated place. Always wear glasses and protective gloves when opening the package. In the event that medicines inadvertently flow into the eyes, wash them immediately with clean water and see a doctor promptly. If medicine splashes on your body and clothes, wash it with clean water immediately.
It has no effect on film properties, but it poses a certain risk to the human body.
3
Attach the sealing ring with clean water or glycerin. Do not use any lubricants (petroleum, grease, petrolatum, detergents), gasoline, thinners, etc.
Water collection pipes and other materials are plastics. If oil, grease, petrolatum and detergents (eg, White Cat) are used on them, the water collecting pipes will crack in a short time. At the same time it is strictly prohibited to use gasoline and thinners. Failure to do so may result in severe degradation of the membrane performance. When installing the membrane element in the membrane shell, use clean water or glycerin to connect and seal the membrane.
4
Handle the membrane element carefully. Do not throw and drop the membrane element.
The damage caused by throwing and disposing of the membrane element will affect the performance of the membrane element.
Very high
5
It is forbidden to hit a brutal installation with a hammer.
This will cause the glass fiber reinforced plastic shell to rupture, so it is forbidden to hit the membrane element with a hammer and install it brutally. In this case, it is difficult to ensure the performance of the membrane element.

1 Prepare Membrane Elements Before Installation 1 Flush System Tubing: If the system is brand new, flush the system tubing sufficiently before installing the membrane to prevent debris, solvents, or residual chlorine from contacting the membrane element.
2 Clean the pressure vessel: Clean the inside of the pressure vessel before installing the membrane element to prevent dirt or debris from depositing on the outer surface of the membrane element. It is recommended to use a sponge ball to dip in a 50% glycerin solution and then use appropriate tools to scrub inside and out of the membrane shell to clean the inner wall of the membrane shell. During the cleaning process, be careful not to scratch the inner surface of the membrane shell with tools.
2 Membrane element mounting sequence Please mount the membrane element in its corresponding pressure vessel.
1 Normally, membrane elements are stored in 1% sodium bisulphite solution and rinsed thoroughly with pure water.
2 As shown in Fig. 1, there is a concentrated water seal on the water supply side of the membrane element. Note that the mounting direction of the seal ring is to open up toward the upstream. The function of the thick water seal ring is to ensure that all the raw water flows into the membrane element without side flow. The flow rate of the raw water itself causes the opening of the concentrated water seal to be tightly sealed against the inner wall of the pressure vessel. If the installation direction of the sealing ring is reversed, the raw water cannot be sealed, causing part of the raw water to flow to the outside of the membrane element, causing the flow rate of the membrane surface to decrease, resulting in scaling and shortening the service life of the membrane.
3 Confirm that the O-ring is installed in the specified position of the connection fitting. When installing, pay attention to the surface of the O-ring and the connector without scratches or attachments. Be careful not to twist the O-ring to install it. If the connection leaks, the raw water will enter the production water, which will lead to a decline in the quality of the produced water. When installed on a water collection pipe, the surface of the O-ring and collector pipe is wetted with pure water, distilled water, or glycerin to facilitate installation.
4 Remove the end plate mounting membrane elements on both sides of the pressure vessel. The adapter is installed on the concentrated water side (downstream) of the header of the first membrane element. The membrane element is then pushed in the direction of the raw water flow and is loaded into the pressure vessel.

Figure 1 Example of installing a membrane element When several membrane elements are mounted consecutively, the next membrane element is to be connected to the connection element before the previous membrane element completely enters the membrane shell. At the same time, be careful not to allow the membrane element to come into contact with the edge of the pressure vessel to prevent scratches and push it into the pressure vessel as far as possible.

Figure 2 Parallel installation of several membrane elements [2]
5 After confirming that the pressure vessel adapter is connected, connect the concentrated water side end plate to the membrane case. For the connection method of the end plate, refer to the instruction manual of the pressure vessel manufacturer.
6 After completing the installation of the concentrate side end plate, push the membrane element from the inlet side to the concentrated side again to ensure that it is completely tightly connected. Then install the inlet plate on the inlet side. When mounting the inlet plate on the inlet side, pay attention to measuring the clearance between the inlet plate and the adapter. If there is a gap, install a 1/4" to 1/8" thick plastic (or other suitable material) gasket with an inside diameter greater than the outside diameter of the adapter until the end plate is not fully seated. Remove the one gasket. Then install the end plate. For the connection method of the end plate, refer to the instruction manual of the membrane shell manufacturer.

3 Removal of membrane elements 1 Remove the piping around the pressure vessel and remove the end plates at both ends of the pressure vessel.
2 Push the membrane element downstream from the raw water inlet and remove the membrane elements one by one on the concentrate outlet side. Do not use hard metal rods when membrane elements are pushed out.
3 Membrane element storage methods are shown in Table 2. If you do not strictly observe this, the performance of the membrane may change, so please pay attention.

Precautions Reasons Impact degree
1
After thoroughly washing the membrane element with water, it was hermetically soaked in a plastic bag containing 1% sodium bisulfite.
If the membrane element is stored in a contaminated state or dried after use, the performance of the membrane element for reuse will be affected.

2
Store in a dark place at 5 to 35 °C.
Storage temperatures outside the range of 5 to 35 °C can affect membrane element performance. This condition does not guarantee its performance.

3
Try to avoid keeping below 5 °C. Do not freeze membrane elements.
Once icing affects membrane element performance. This condition does not guarantee its performance.
