New material retroreflective film used in traffic signs 【Full Text】

Security Exhibition Network Science and Technology Researchers from the two universities of Fudan University in China and Buffalo University in the United States have developed a new retroreflective film that reflects light in an interesting way, which can be used to make bright road signs and change at night colour.
The study was led by Limin Wu of Fudan University in China. The group developed this material. Optical experts at the University of Buffalo in the United States provided insights into the potential applications of this film, such as its use in night road signs . The researchers said that this new technology will help drivers pay attention to important traffic information at night and provide sufficient information reminders for driving safety.
The film consists of polymer microspheres spread on the adhesive surface of the transparent tape. The physical structure of the material leads to an interesting phenomenon: when white light shines on the film at night, some observers will see a single, stable color reflected back, while other observers will see the changed color.

In a set of experiments, the researchers used this material to create a speed limit sign that contained letters and numbers made from a new retroreflective structure color film (RSCF). Scientists placed a white light nearby to illuminate the sign. When a fast-moving car passed by, the color of the person's image on the sign flashed within the driver's view as the viewing angle changed.
In other tests, the team applied new materials to mark the side of the road, indicating the boundary of the lane. When the car approaches, the mark lights up in bright colors, reflecting the light from the vehicle's headlights. From the driver's perspective, the color of the mark remains stable. But for pedestrians on the side of the road, when the car accelerates, the color of the lane markings will continue to flash after the headlights are illuminated.

"This kind of material can be used to make traffic signs," said Qiaoqiang Gan, associate professor of electrical engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Buffalo, and co-author of the new study. If drivers do n’t concentrate when driving, discolored signs can help them better To understand traffic information, so do pedestrians.
Co-author Haomin Song, an assistant professor of electrical engineering research at the University of Buffalo, added, "If a car travels faster, pedestrians will see the color change faster, and such a logo can provide a lot of information."

Road traffic experiments with new materials were conducted in China, but Dengxin Ji, a graduate of Gan, Song and Buffalo University, helped design the test. In addition to teaching at the University of Buffalo, Gan was also a summer visiting professor at Shanghai University of Technology during the collaborative work. The research was funded by China's National Key Research and Development Program and China National Natural Science Foundation.
